BARRISTERS' CHAMBERS OFFERS FREE TRAINING TO CHARITIES
Foundry Chambers, a London legal practice today launches their Spring program of free training for UK charities, titled 'The Reasonable Employer, Implementing Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures'.
Yetunde Ruban, an employment law barrister at Foundry Chambers says, "Complaints about breaches of disciplinary and grievance procedures account for 30% of all tribunal claims and charities are twice as likely as any other employer to be taken to the employment tribunals. Charities need proper training in these areas in order to reduce and avoid the risk of tribunal claims which can jeopardize their ability to continue to deliver public services to their communities."
Each organization's disciplinary and grievance procedures are incorporated in the training program, so that managers understand and become fully familiar with their own procedures. Ruban says, "Most organizations can only afford to train one senior manager. However there are others, line managers, trusties and members of the management committee, involved in the disciplinary and grievance process and who should be trained on how to implement their organizations procedures. The failure to train them lies at the root of the problem."
Each organization's procedure will be reviewed during the training process and a report will be available to each organization. The report will contain recommendations about such things as updating and making the procedures more user-friendly. Ruban went on to say, "Almost every organization has written procedures, however, they are often confusing, full of legal jargon and unhelpful to a manager who just wants to know what to do and how to do it."
The training will be carried out by barristers who have experience advising and representing charities as well as small businesses. Ruban says, "The training will give participants an understanding of how to carry out fair procedures and avoid pitfalls that often land charities in employment tribunals."
